Biography

Libby McNiven received her BA in mathematics and cognitive science from Wellesley College in 2003. She worked at an independent high school in Rome, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and at The Electric Sheep Company before beginning her studies at UC Davis.

McNiven is currently pursuing a PhD in Nutritional Biology. Her research, with Dr. Carolyn Slupsky, focuses on gut microbiome development in infant rhesus macaques. She is currently using NMR spectroscopy and analytical metabolomics to quantify compounds in rhesus urine. This research has implications regarding the use of rhesus macaques as a model animal for human infants, and as well as the development of infant formula.
