Functional Glycobiology Program

Glycans are complex sugar structures that have many crucial roles in biology. The Functional Glycobiology Program (FGP) focuses on discovering and characterizing glycan-containing compounds in foods that have important biological functions. Current FGP research projects focus on the structures and functions of free glycans as well as glyco-conjugates (glycoproteins and glycolipids) in the infant intestine and how they support the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria as well as eliminate pathogens.  Watch a video of researcher David Mills at the 2009 Sackler Symposium explaining the Infant Microbiome project in greater detail.
