Since its inception in 2005, the group has assembled a dossier of publications, analytical, physiological, clinical, and molecular methods and protocols, patents on structure-function relationships of a number of oligosaccharide compounds, microbial genetic sequences, and structural databases related to bioactive components found in human milk, which are currently being translated to commercially viable sources of oligosaccharides from bovine milk and other sources. The first generation of products will include a range of prebiotic compounds for the deflection of pathogens, including anti-viral and anti-microbial activity, the modulation of intestinal signaling and whole-body metabolism, as well as inflammation.
The Milk Bioactives Program has developed a patent portfolio focusing on the functional attributes of health-promoting bioactive ingredients and technologies for bringing them to market. The first generation of patents has focused on the interaction between beneficial gut bacteria and their human hosts.
